Being a caseworker in an organisation can attract criminal gangs, who see the caseworkers as threatening their activities.

As an example of what can happen, the son of a caseworker in one of our sites was targeted by an International gang sponsored by a government without respect for human rights. He was murdered and his heart sent in a parcel to the caseworker as a penalty for opposing their criminal activities.

Criminal gangs are simply not very nice people and unfortunately they operate across borders.

RIPS is used for many other types of client, who have multiple vulnerabilities, as well as refugees.

In Libya, for example, warlords may choose to enter into other geographical territories and kidnap whoever they can find. A ransom is then demanded from his/her family. If no ransom is paid despite the cries of pain from the torture inflicted by the kidnappers, the body of the tortured victim will be left at the doorstep of an NGO. RIPS is used to manage the client and to restore him/her back to health. After such tortures, the victims have multiple vulnerabilities, which are unlikely to ever go away entirely. This type of case is not about supporting refugees or asylum seekers but about providing medical care, psychosocial care and shelter until the victim can return to their family.
